Pearl Harbor Commemoration

Saturday 11:55 a.m. - 1:55 p.m.

Join us as we come together at the National Museum of the Pacific War for our annual Pearl Harbor Commemoration on Saturday, December 7th beginning at 11:55 am. The event honors the thousands killed or injured during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Members of the public are invited to gather at the Pearl Harbor Wall of the Memorial Courtyard before the event moves into the Admiral Nimitz Ballroom. Event Details: Date: Saturday, December 7th Time: 11: 55 am - 2 pm The commemoration will begin with a wreath laying by the Pearl Harbor Wall followed by a presentation in the Historic Nimitz Ballroom from Dorinda Nicholson, author of Pearl Harbor Child: A Child's View of Pearl Harbor - From Attack To Peace. Nicholson was born in Hawaii to a Hawaiian mother and Caucasian father. As civilians, they were living in Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack, and stayed until they were forced to give up their home after the end of the war. Her book tells the story of being a child living in the middle of Pearl Harbor during the attack on December 7, 1941. She recalls what it is like to carry a gas mask everywhere, to have bomb shelters on the school play ground, curfews and blackouts, and barbed wire everywhere. Following the presentations wrap up at 12:40 pm, attendees will be invited to stay for a book signing from Nicholson and the chance to participate in educational activities for the whole family such as making origami Cranes, an engaging story time segment, and coloring pages until the events closure at 2 pm.

Kids Reading to Kids

Saturday 3 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Join us for another Kids Reading to Kids event on Saturday, December 7th at 3pm. I know what you're thinking, and yes, that is the same day as our ornament workshop at 1pm. Take part in them both to really get into the holiday spirit! This time, our reader will be Anna Frates. Anna will be reading three books that are great for the spirit of the season, “How to Catch an Elf” by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton, “How to Catch Santa Claus” by Alice Walstead & Andy Elkerton, and “How to Catch a Snowman” by Adam Wallace & Andy Elkerton. Some of Anna's favorite books are The Eighth Day, Goosebumps, and The Unteachables. She also likes to dance, play games, and play with her sisters. She goes to school at the Stem Academy, and her favorite subjects are math and engineering. She is interested in doing this program because she wants to support her community. Some fun facts about Anna are that she knows how to play flute, she's learning how to play piano, and she have a pet cat.
