Partners for Sacred Places, the only national advocate for the sound stewardship and active community use of America’s older religious properties, provides a collection of resources for the preservation of historic religious buildings through their Information Center, including funding, repair and maintenance guides and economic studies.
The organization was founded in 1989 by a national task force of religious, historic preservation, and philanthropic leaders. The National Fund for Sacred Places is a grant program offered by Partners for Sacred Places in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation to provide financial support for historic houses of worship and their associated charitable organizations for the purposes of planning, individualized technical assistance, training, and capital grants for building restoration.
Grants are assessed following five criteria: National/Regional Significance, Community Engagement, Project Scope & Need, Fundraising Campaign Readiness, and Healthy Congregations.
Submissions must be for properties originally built as houses of worship, listed or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and owned by an active community of faith. Properties must have urgent repair needs, but projects that improve usability or ADA compliance, or make a vacant or underused space usable for important community outreach are also eligible.
Projects must adhere to the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
Projects must be able to raise matching funds at a 1:1 rate for grants of $50,000 to $100,000. Grants from $100,001 to $250,000 require matching funds of 2:1.
