The Heritage Tourism Program supports the development and promotion of high-quality, place-based heritage experiences in communities across Texas. Our emphasis is on the experience of a heritage of a city, region, state, or country, enabling the visitor to not just learn about, but also be surrounded by local customs, traditions, history, and culture. Why do we care about tourism at the Texas Historical Commission? Because the relationship between tourism and preservation is cyclical: a growing market for heritage tourism will encourage the restoration of historic sites, which will in turn increase visitation and stimulate local economies, creating resources for additional preservation.
