The Skills of the Trade: Sewing by Hand

Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Experience live 1840s sewing demonstrations every Friday at Fort Martin Scott, leading up to the First Annual Frontier Fest, April 17-19. The program will evolve each week, offering hands-on opportunities for visitors to engage in the process and witness the creation of an authentic women’s ensemble. Come with your questions and curiosity!

Crafting Sailor's Valentines: Myth and Artistry

Found in Ima Hogg’s art collection, sailor’s valentines may look like floral arrangements, but they are really made from hundreds of shells! Discover the hidden stories of craftswomen, consider how myths develop, and make a sailor valentine of your own.

Boots and Saddles: Leatherworking

Saturday 12 p.m. - 3 p.m.

In the time before plastic, leather was used to create the items that were used on the frontier. Leather was a critical element for everyday life, and generally a renewable resource given the abundance of wildlife around the region. From the boots the soldiers wore to the saddles they sat on; leather was a necessity. Come learn about the many different uses of leather and see the process that goes into creating and preserving those items
