Pathways through History

In this self-guided tour of the Levi Jordan Plantation, visitors learn that this plantation is significant to the antebellum period of Texas history and the tumultuous era of Reconstruction. Visitors get a glimpse of the sizable plantation operation and the two-story Greek Revival-style house, and to learn about the enslaved people who lived and worked here in the mid-1800s. Wear your walking shoes and check in at the visitor center for a site map and information. You will get to see the visitor center, archeology lab, and Plantation House during your visit.

In the late 1840s, Levi Jordan moved his family and enslaved workers to Texas to establish a sugar and cotton plantation on this site. A tour of Levi Jordan Plantation highlights the multiple perspectives and evolving relationships of those who lived and worked on this land. It also provides a unique opportunity to understand the evolving agricultural history of the South and the early African American experience in Texas. A guided tour includes the exhibition in the visitor center, the archeology lab, and the historic house.

School Tour

Digging Deep: Archeology at Levi Jordan
Grades: 3–5
Capacity: 20–60 students
Timing: 2–2.5 hours
Cost: $1 per student. One chaperone for every 10 students is free and required; additional adults are $8 per person. 

The Levi Jordan Plantation is an active archeological site with a focus on learning about the enslaved people who lived and worked here in the mid-1800s. Students will get a guided tour and see how historians are uncovering the history of this site. They will get to visit the archeology lab and complete a lab activity and participate in a brick making activity.

Scout Program

BSA Archeology Badge
Capacity: up to 25 people
Timing 2.5 days, call for scheduling
Cost: $45 per scout

Scouts will receive instruction from experienced archeologists, completing requirements for the Archaeology Merit Badge through hands-on projects, research, and presentations. Scouts will participate with an archeological project, engage in experimental archeology, visit a historic site, and learn how archeology contributes to history. Perquisites may be needed for the archeology badge.

Parking 

Visitor parking is available through our main entrance off-road FM-524. The visitor center can be accessed through the boardwalk. 

Accessibility 

The visitor center and archelogy lab are wheelchair accessible, but the plantation house is not. Access to the plantation house is through unpaved terrain. Restrooms are located in the visitor center. 

Museum Store 

Our museum store is located in the visitor center and offers books and other THC branded items. 

Groups & Tours 

Self-guided tours are available and guided tours are currently available Friday through Sunday. Guided tours must be booked in advance and are $15 per person. For groups of 20 people or more, please call 979-798-2202 or email us.
