The Texas Historical Commission has launched a partnership with County Historical Commissions to gather current photos of Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHL) for the Historic Sites Atlas and Texas History Navigator app. The Atlas features over 300,000 site records, including data on Official Texas Historical Markers and National Register of Historic Places properties in Texas.
This webpage contains resources to help CHCs conduct a photo survey of their county’s RTHL properties. The training content is organized into four sections that cover a specific phase of a photo survey. Each section contains a webinar, a PDF copy of the presentation, survey documents, and links to helpful resources.

About the Project
The development of these training resources grew from the necessity to assist CHCs with visiting and monitoring historically designated properties, a statutory responsibility provided in Texas Local Government Code, Chapter 318. The CHC Outreach Program and Friends of the Texas Historical Commission Preservation Scholar, Jennifer Campbell, photo surveyed RTHLs in Travis County and created step-by-step guidance from their first-hand knowledge of the project.
