At Fort McKavett State Historic Site, visitors travel into the past viewing restored structures of a military fort that was established in 1852. Visitors can spend time in the fort’s visitors center museum (the fort’s hospital building) learning about the history of the site, or experience nature along the quarter-mile trail to the fort’s spring at the headwaters of the San Saba River.
We recommend allowing an hour and a half for a comprehensive tour of the site. The tour is almost entirely outside and requires extensive walking; therefore, we suggest dressing appropriately. Golf carts are available for use, although they cannot be taken down the nature trail.

Gift Shop
A gift shop is located inside the visitors center. An assortment of t-shirts, caps, and wooden period toys are available for purchase.
Accessibility
The site is not wheelchair accessible, although some parts of the site can be navigated by wheelchair. A golf cart is available for touring the fort grounds, which are gravel and not ADA-approved for wheelchairs.
Facilities
Visitors are encouraged to use the site’s picnic areas. Drinks are available for purchase on site and restrooms are also available.
