After the transition from Frontier Army Outpost to West Texas Ranching Community, Ft. McKavett was located in the heart of the wool and mohair industry of Texas. Many of the residents of Fort McKavett worked in the industry, particularly as members of shearing crews that traveled between ranches harvesting the "clip" and preparing it for shipment to Wool Houses and eventually, cloth mills.
This program will show the audience the differences in fibers of mohair and wool, the history of the industry, the historical techniques used to shear and how the fibers are graded for market. We will have historians from the industry and ranchers that raise these animals talking everything mohair and wool.
There will be 2 shearing sessions throughout the day- 11am and 1pm
