Students from Rice University’s Archaeological Field Techniques Class will be excavating at the Varner-Hogg Plantation Picnic Loop this Spring Semester! The class is focusing their efforts on the structures discovered and documented during the Summer 2023 drought.

The class’s weekend excavations allow students to learn what archeology is really like while still being able to keep a normal college semester. Stop by the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site during the following weekends to check on their progress, ask questions, and learn about archaeology on site:

January 25 & 26

February 1 & 2

February 8 & 9

February 22 & 23

March 1 & 2

All days are subjects to weather and class scheduling.
