Join us as we celebrate 4th of July weekend with a themed program series: Red, White, and Blue at San Felipe de Austin!
On Friday, July 4th, we focus on the color red by dyeing with cochineal; an insect used to produce red dye for millennia!
Historically, cochineal was the best resource in producing a bright red color in dyed items. The dye is so useful it is still used in things such as cosmetics today. Because the bug is native to the Americas, it was widespread in Mexico and easily accessible in Austin's Colony.
The dyeing process will take place from 10am to 3pm on Friday, July 4th! Dyed products will be on display until 4pm.
