Our America, Our Texas, Our El Paso: an America250 lecture series presented by the Magoffin Home State Historic Site

Mayor Magoffin: Father of El Paso with Machelle Wood

July 23, Doors open at 6:00 PM, Lecture at 6:30 PM

Magoffin Home Visitor Center

When the four time Mayor of El Paso, Joseph Magoffin, died the city shut its doors in mourning, with offices closed, churchbells rung, and flags lowered to half mast. The newspaper proclaimed him “The Father of El Paso” for his work developing El Paso’s poltical network, businesses, and social opportunities. Join Magoffin Home educator, Machelle Wood, to explore the life of Joseph Magoffin and determine if he really deserves the title of “Father of El Paso.” This engaging, media-rich lecture brings his world to life with rare images, maps, and letters from the Magoffin Home archives.

This event will take place on July 23, 2026 at the Magoffin Home Visitor Center at 1117 Magoffin Avenue. Light refreshments and beverages will be available as a fundraiser for the Casa Magoffin Compañeros beginning at 6 PM. The talk will start at 6:30 and will be in English, but the speaker and staff will be available to answer questions in Spanish.

This event is presented as part of Texas America250, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
